The Three Key Ingredients to Styling Your Images

Styling your images is all about creating a cohesive, eye-catching look that captures your brand’s essence. Whether you’re shooting for social media, your website, or a press feature, there are three key ingredients to think about when it comes to styling your photos:

  • Light

  • Props

  • Set

The options for each of these are endless, and the way you combine them will define your brand’s style and vibe. To help you explore the possibilities, I’ve put together a few videos that demonstrate different approaches to each ingredient.

1. Light

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in photography. It sets the mood, enhances textures, and brings your product to life. Whether you’re using soft, diffused light for a dreamy look or dramatic shadows for a bold statement, lighting can completely change the feel of an image.

2. Props

Props are the storytellers of your shoot. From complementary items that give context to bold accents that add personality, the props you choose can make or break your image. Think about how your props reflect your brand—are they minimalist and clean, playful and colorful, or luxurious and textured?

3. Set

Your set is the stage for your shoot. Whether you’re keeping it simple with a seamless backdrop, adding layers with textured surfaces, or going big with an immersive environment, your set plays a massive role in defining the final look of your image.

Experiment and Play

Once you’ve got your ingredients—light, props, and set—start experimenting! Pick one of each and see what you can create. Then, switch it up. Change the lighting style, swap out your props, or try a different set.

It’s fascinating how much a single change can completely alter the vibe of your image. For example, moving from soft, natural light to a moody, high-contrast setup can take your photo in a whole new direction.

Share Your Creations

I’d love to see what you come up with! If you create something cool, don’t forget to share it in the Photography for Makers Facebook group. It’s a space to connect, get inspired, and share your progress.

So, grab your camera (or phone!), gather your ingredients, and get styling. The possibilities are endless, and the fun is just beginning! 🎨📸
